Several unknown Vietnamese scholarships are available through the Vietnamese American Scholarship Foundation (VASF). The deadline to apply for these little known scholarships are typically in early May. While there are multiple Vietnamese scholarships offered through the foundation, each scholarship does have its own selection criteria.

Vera Tran Memorial Scholarship

This Vietnamese scholarship was established in memory of Vera Tran. Vera had planned to become a physician and had already been accepted into the Medical program at UH-Baylor. Vera was also an active advocate for the rights of others and frequently worked to raise funds to assist victims of disasters and in other ways to help her community. This scholarship is made available to graduating high school seniors who are of Vietnamese descent and who have a goal of pursuing a higher education. Each year one student will be awarded the Vera Tran Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship has a value of $2,000 and is a one-time award. Applicants for this scholarship should demonstrate a history of academic excellence and community service. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens. Individuals planning to apply for the scholarship will need to complete an essay as part of the application process.

Danny T. Le Memorial Scholarship

This Vietnamese scholarship is awarded in memory of Danny Le. Danny was a graduate of Alief Elsik High School who also attended the University of Texas and was a Biomedical Engineering major. Danny’s goal was to eventually become a doctor and help others by working in third-world countries through a medical humanitarian organization. A little known scholarship in his memory is now available to students who are of Vietnamese descent and who are also from the Greater Houston area. The scholarship is open to high school seniors as well as college students. One student will receive a scholarship each year with a value of $2,000. The award is one-time only. Applicants applying for the scholarship should have a history of academic excellence and community service. Applicants are also required to be pursuing a degree at an accredited 4-year university or have plans to do so.

Thuy Nguyen Memorial Scholarship

Thuy Nguyen left Vietnam with her husband and children in 1975 to pursue a new life in America. In order to support her family, she worked two full-time jobs. As a result of this, Mrs. Nguyen came to high value higher education and encouraged her children to take advantage of all of the educational opportunities available to them. Prospective candidates for the Thuy Nguyen scholarship should be a graduating high school senior from Houston or a surrounding area and should also have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. Candidates should also have at least one parent who is Vietnamese and have a family annual income of less than $50,000. The scholarship consists of a $2,000 prize that is awarded directly to the student’s college or university of choice. This VASF scholarship is awarded annually to a new freshman candidate each year. Candidates applying for this Vietnamese scholarship should be prepared to compose an essay of 1000 words or less.

Lê Hoàng Nguyên (LHN) College Scholarship

This VASF scholarship is awarded in memory of a well-known businessman and philanthropist as well as long-time resident of Houston, Texas. Mr. Nguyen graduated from Texas A&M University in 1993 and came to be a supporter of integrity, hard work and loyalty. It was through mindset that he established the Le Hoang Nguyen Scholarship Foundation as a way of awarding Vietnamese scholarships to future leaders.

Today this Vietnamese scholarship provides financial funding to high school seniors who are considered to be outstanding students. Awards are given based on personal integrity, academic merit, future career goals and leadership aptitude. One VASF scholarship award is given annually in the amount of $500. The award is presented directly to the student’s university or college of choice upon verification of enrollment. To be eligible for the unknown scholarships, applicants must be residents of Texas, must have at least a GPA of 3.0 and must be ranked among the top10% of their graduating class. In addition, applicants must also attend their first semester at an accredited university or college. Applicants are also required to be of Vietnamese descent to be eligible for this Vietnamese American Scholarship Foundation award.

The Society of the Honor Guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is responsible for hand selecting the soldiers who guard the Tomb of the Unknowns. The Tomb is situated in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. The cemetery was initially started during the Civil War. The property where the cemetery rests was once owned by Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Since that time, the cemetery has been expanded to some 200 acres. More than 300,000 people are now interred in the cemetery. The gold veined marble sarcophagus contains the remains of an unknown World War I soldier. Three other marble slabs have been placed over the graves of unknown soldiers from World War I as well as the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

All soldiers considered as a guard are required to have strong military bearing as well as stamina and discipline. More than 80% of those who try out for to be a guard for the Tomb do not actually make the cut due to the strict requirements to serve as a guard.

Along with stamina, disciple and bearing, all soldiers considered as guard material must be able to perform flawlessly seven different types of honors, walks and ceremonies. They are also required to learn massive amounts of knowledge regarding Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb and the U.S. Army. Guards typically only serve about one year of duty. Since 1937, the Tomb has been continuously guarded. Prior to that time the Tomb was not guarded and the public often picnicked around the Tomb area. Guards continue on duty even during severe weather. While the identities of the Unknown Soldiers have largely remained unknown, one of the soldiers was exhumed in 1988 and later identified as Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie. Blassie had been shot down in 1972 in Vietnam. His remains were later returned to his family so they could be buried in his hometown in Missouri. The other tombs contain the remains of soldiers from World I and II as well as the Korean Conflict.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Scholarships Criteria

Dependents of deceased Tomb Guards whose deaths occurred prior to the SHGTUS being established will be given preference. Preference is also given to dependents of members of the Society who were killed or incapacitated while serving on active duty. Members of the Society who have become separated from the Army and who later become incapacitated will also receive special consideration by the scholarship selection committee.

Recipients of the Unknown Soldier scholarships are required to enroll in an accredited university, college, business college, community college, vocational school or nursing school. The unknown scholarships are for one year. Students who receive the little known scholarship are allowed to re-apply on an annual basis as long as they are able to maintain a GPA of 2.5 for each term and they are enrolled on a full-time basis.

Along with submitting a completed application, candidates should also include a one to two page essay which states their goals and how the Unknown Soldier scholarship can help them to reach their goals. In addition, candidates should also submit a letter of recommendation regarding their volunteer and/or community efforts. Applications for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier scholarships should be filed by April 15th.

This little known scholarship can be renewed up to four years by recipients. In order to continue receiving the funds, the student must remain enrolled in a four year program full time. They must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be involved with various activities of the college and community. They must stay in good standing in terms of behavior with the college as well.

The Jimmie scholarship has been in place since 2008. Jimmie L Dean was a long term resident of the state of Oklahoma. He believed that education, respect, and personal goals could help a person to do very well in life. JD was an American country music singer, television host, actor as well as a businessman from creating his brand of Jimmie Dean sausages.The funds for this unheard of scholarship are from his estate as he had it set up before his death for the money he had to be used for a good cause.

The Academic Scholarship is worth up to $5,000 and can be used toward one year of training in a college degree in the aerospace or aviation field. Students are allowed to re-apply for the scholarship. The aviation scholarship may be used toward the completion of an associate’s degree as well as bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or doctoral degree in fields such as engineering, aerospace, aviation business management or air traffic management. Students must be currently enrolled to be eligible to these scholarships for aviation.

The Technical Training scholarship is a fully paid scholarship available for completing an aerospace or aviation certification course or technical training course. The Emergency Maneuver Training Scholarship is a fully paid scholarship that can be used for providing emergency maneuver as well as spin training along with an intro to aerobatics. The aviation scholarship is available to any licensed pilot member without regards to financial need or existing ratings, provided the applicant is a member of The 99s.

Students who wish to apply to these unknown scholarships for aviation students must belong to a local chapter and may request an application and recommendation from their local chapter. Each Amelia Earhart chapter must submit their scholarship applications by no later than December 20th. Unused scholarships for college are a great example of why students should always apply to as many programs as they are eligible, because they may stumble across some programs which have not met their funding numbers and as a result they may have a better chance than normal to get access to that aid. Every year, there are numerous unknown scholarship programs which do not meet the number of students they are expecting to provide financial assistance to. The National Associate of Black Journalists gives out at least $60,000 in award money every year, at least part of which comes out as unused college scholarship money due to the lack of applicants to the program. They offer five different scholarships, many giving out at least $2,500. Applicants interested in the program should be members of the NABJ, be interested in journalism as a career and have only one year of school left. Though the 2011 application period has closed, students should pay attention to the website for the opening of the 2012 cycle.

There are numerous unused scholarships out there for students who take the time to look for them. Locating lists of underutilized scholarship programs is a great place to start, as every year institutions providing financial aid release the amount of money they set aside and the amount they ended up using. These lists can provide a great focal point for students to start their unused scholarship search and hopefully come out with some additional money to help them pay for school.

About the AFCEA Education Foundation

There are three components of the AFCEA Education Foundation. These components include awards for merit and excellence, scholarships, fellowships and grants and the AFCEA Professional Development Center.

AFCEA International or the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association also supports local chapters as well as sponsors events while promoting education and providing member benefits for the purpose of equipping members with the tools and knowledge necessary to meet government challenges. There are more than 31,000 AFCEA members.

Unknown AFCEA Scholarships have Many Programs

One of the AFCEA scholarships is the LGS Graduate Internship Program. Lots of Scholarships from AFCEA

The AFCEA Educational Foundation offers 50 little known scholarships worth $5,000 each. The AFCEA scholarships are available to students who actively pursue an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or licensure/credential for the purpose of teaching science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) subjects at a middle or secondary school in the United States. These unknown scholarships are made possible by contributions from Terremark Worldwide, Booz Allen Hamilton, AFCEA International and numerous AFCEA regional chapters.

To be eligible students must be United States citizens and also must have a GPA of at least 3.0. Undergraduate students must also be attending a college or university that is in the U.S. and accredited. They must also be majoring in a STEM or secondary education field with the goal of teaching STEM subjects in a secondary or middle school in the U.S. Graduate students must also be enrolled currently in a minimum of two semester-equivalent classes at an accredited college or university in the United States. Licensure and credential students must have completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in a STEM related major.

Along with the $5,000 scholarships, graduating AFCEA STEM scholars may also be eligible to receive a $1,000 grant annually for three years, provided the recipient will continue teaching a STEM related subject. The AFCEA Science Teaching Tools grants may be used for funding software and hardware, classroom tools, STEM-focused clubs, field trips and other activities.

AFCEA Teacher Scholarships

An additional STEM Teacher scholarship worth $5,000 is also awarded annual to a future teacher who attends a college in Virginia. This scholarship is offered in honor of The Honorable John W. Warner, who was a former United States Senator and former Secretary of the Navy.

There is also a STEM Teacher scholarship worth $2,500 that is awarded annually in order to honor MG Eugene C. Renzi. Recipients are chosen from STEM Teacher applicants. A $2,500 scholarship is also awarded annually as a result of contributions from J. Spargo & Associates. Recipients are chosen from STEM Teacher Applicants.

Master Level AFCEA Scholarships

Other AFCEA scholarships unknown include the Ralph W. Shrader Diversity Scholarship, which was created to provide educational opportunities for persons who pursue advanced degrees on the master’s level. $3,000 obscure scholarships are also awarded to full-time graduate students who are currently pursuing a master’s degree in electronics, electrical, systems, chemical, communications engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, management information systems or computer technology.

College bound students or students already enrolled in college may be interested in applying for the unknown scholarships from ROTC as a way to help pay for their college expenses. Army ROTC scholarships are awarded based on the grades and merit of students rather than financial need, making them available to a wider group of students. There are actually many different types of ROTC college scholarships from the Army ROTC available. Two, three and four year ROTC scholarships are available with options that are based on the amount of time left for the student to complete their degree. These unknown scholarship options also include full-tuition scholarships with options also available for room and board for those who qualify. Additional allowances may also be available that allow for the costs of books and fees.

ROTC Scholarships Pay Living Expenses

ROTC scholarships may also make monthly living allowances available for each school year. Eligible students can earn amounts based on their level in the ROTC curriculum. During the first year, students may qualify for $300 per month. During their second year in the program, students may qualify for $350 per month. During their third year in the program, students may qualify for $450 per month. During their fourth year in the program, students may qualify for $500 per month.

Air-Force ROTC Scholarships

Along with the Army ROTC scholarships, there are also Air-Force ROTC scholarships available to students who qualify. Three and four year scholarships are available to high school seniors. Scholarships through this program pay full college tuition as well as most fees as well as money for books per year. Living expenses are also available through Air-Force ROTC scholarships. Once activated, cadets will receive a monthly allowance or stipend that is non-taxable. The current monthly allowance for freshmen cadets is $300. The monthly allowance for sophomore cadets is $350 while the monthly allowance for junior cadets is $450. Senior cadets receive a monthly stipend of $500 per month.

High school seniors who are awarded a scholarship may also be eligible to receive a travel authorization to pay for travel from their home to their Air Force ROTC detachment. The reimbursement will be sent approximately 30 days after school starts.
Along with the Army and Air-Force ROTC there are also scholarships available through the Navy and Marine ROTC programs.

How to Get ROTC Scholarships

The ROTC or Reserve Officers’ Training Corps offers training for prospective military officers. College students with an interest in joining the military upon college graduation will be able to join the Army, Air Force, Navy or Marines ROTC to get an idea of what military life is like. Students in the ROTC also have access to ROTC unknown scholarships that can help them to pay for most if not all of their educational costs. In order to be eligible, scholarship recipients must follow certain rules.

Each branch of the ROTC program has basic rules that relate to eligibility. Students must be a United States citizen and must also be between the ages of 17 and 26. For Marine and Navy ROTC scholarships, all candidates must be between the ages of 17 and 23 when they apply. All ROTC applicants must also meet educational requirements, including a minimum 2.5 GPA for the Army ROTC. For the Air Force ROTC, the minimum GPA requirement is 3.0. Scholarship applicants must also have a minimum SAT and ACT score. The minimum SAT score is 920 for the Army and is 1050 for the Navy. The minimum SAT score for the Marine Corps is 1000 and the minimum SAT score for the Air Force is 1100. The minimum ACT score for the Marine Corps and Navy is 22, 19 for the Army and 24 for the Air Force.

Unknown Scholarships from ROTC require Physical Endurance

Students must also meet certain physical standards in order to qualify for scholarships from ROTC, including completing the Presidential Fitness Challenge Physical Fitness Test, which consists of a 1 mile run as well as other activities. ROTC scholarship recipients are expected to be committed to service within their branch of the armed services. The Army requires a commitment of eight years; consisting of four years in active duty and four years in the reserves. The Navy and Marine Corps require a five year commitment on active duty. The Air-Force requires a four week summer field training course as well as completion of the professional officer course and a commitment to four years of active duty service.

These unknown scholarships by ROTC are not for everyone but for those patriotic individuals who don’t mind serving in the US military in exchange for a paid college education. This program is designed with the best type of financial assistance on the market today and is sometimes hard to resist from individuals who cannot or do not want to pay for their college education. Students will get their college paid for but eventually have to pay for it with their time spent in the military.

A “full load” is required, which in a semester format consists of 12 units.

Those looking to apply for this little-known scholarship must meet certain academic criteria to be considered. While there are some variances involved regarding the individual chapters and their scholastic requirements, generally, students must have at least a 2.5 GPA, though a 3.0 is required by some chapters. Further, financial need will be a large part of the decision-making process. Undergraduate students are preferred, though those pursuing a Master’s or Doctorate program are welcome to submit an application. Students that are already receiving grants for athletic participation are not eligible to receive this unfamiliar scholarship.

In addition to the academic prowess exhibited by the applicants, a statement is required to help determine the academic course that the student will take. Included in this statement should be a brief description of what the student expects to gain from their collegiate experience as well as the career that they will pursue once they have their degree. Eastern Star scholarships are provided by the Order of the Eastern Star, an organization that has several ties to the Freemasons. Beginning in 1995 the program has provided over a million dollars in scholarship funds to a selection participants. Holocaust Remembrance scholarships or Project are awarded to students based on what amounts to an essay contest built around concepts which change every year but always relate to the holocaust in one way or another. All winners of the Holocaust Remembrance Scholarship will not only be rewarded with an all expense paid trip to a location of the foundation’s choice but will also receive a $2,500 to $5,000 award which will applied to applicable education expenses such as tuition. Every year 10 awards are given out to first place winners. In order to be eligible for the program applicants must be under the age of 19 and currently be an enrolled high school student. Finally all applicants must be residents of the United States or its territories. University for Peace scholarships were put into place to help fund tuition at the University of Peace, a program mandated through the United Nations to develop international cooperation through peace. Multiple University for Peace scholarships exist and they tend to be unknown scholarships and their are many awards given out every year. Though the process for these scholarships is fairly competitive, students interested in the program should certainly consider them as, like many of other colleges, the University for Peace can be somewhat expensive to attend without financial assistance.

Because the program is dedicated to opening room for students interested in various academic programs, University for Peace scholarships are available and encourage students from diverse backgrounds to apply for the school. These unheard of scholarships come from the University of Peace itself as well as groups like the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships and Ford Foundation International Fellows programs. While funding is certainly not assured by any means, the opportunities for funding are great which means that students will have a decent chance to win an award through these obscure scholarships.

University for Peace scholarships come in two different forms providing either full tuition costs or partially covering various expenses. These easy potentially scholarships can cover lodging, tuition fees, and other costs directly related to attending the school not including books or travel. Full University for Peace scholarships provides a monthly stipend for students in order to help them with day to day costs. Partial University for Peace scholarships will only cover a percentage of overall tuition expenses. Students will need to demonstrate a strong academic record, a financial need and be attending the University for Peace. All students from any nationality are eligible to apply. All material must be submitted no later than March 31 of every year.

This is one of the easiest scholarships to get while attending the University of Peace as it works through regional representation and has a large number of opportunities available. While specific numbers are not given for the amount of awards given out every year, the website suggests that a good number of students would be able to receive an award.

Of course not all students will be able to get a direct University for Peace scholarship leaving them looking towards other sources of funding to help get them through their education. Rotary International is a good secondary source to look into through their University of Peace Rotary Scholarships. The Academic Year scholarship program provides $27,000 to students looking to study in another country. Since the University for Peace is, for many students, in another country (Costa Rica), this scholarship should be applicable to their situation.

In order to be eligible for the University for Peace scholarship students will need to have completed at least two years of their university education, been employed in recognized fields, and be citizens of a country where a rotary club is located. Every year this program provides funds for on average at least 500 different students making the chances that an applicant will be able to get financial assistance better than were they applying to a program with only two awards every year. The deadline for this program varies depending on the region in which an applicant is applying, so check in with a local Rotary Club to get access to deadline information regarding this easy scholarship.

Unknown scholarships at the University for Peace can be difficult to find, but they do exist. Outside of Rotary and University for Peace scholarships, there are few other sources which hand out a high amount of awards for this program every year. Despite this, students should certainly check in with various sources. The University for Peace suggests using the Idealist.org scholarship search engine to find international scholarship opportunities. While results will not always turn out to be easy scholarships, it does represent a good starting point. In all hopes students will have gotten the funding they need through the easy scholarships offered through the Rotary Ambassador or University for Peace scholarships, but gaps may still exist which will need to filled with alternate sources.
